Gifford was born in Paris, France, when Aaron Epstein, her father, was stationed there along with his family in 1953. Soon after, her family came back to the US and settled at Bowie, Maryland. 

Gifford had always loved singing and performing. She would often perform songs with her folk group “Pennsylvania Next Right” in high school and even went on to study drama and music at university in Oklahoma. 

After several minor appearances on TV as a singer, Gifford finally got to co-host The Morning Show with Regis Philbinon WABC-TVin 1985. In 1988, the talk show got broadcasted as Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee making Gifford a household name across the country.
